More Canadians surf and watch, MTM says

The rate of English-speaking Canadians using the Internet while watching television has more than doubled from seven years ago, a new report by Media Technology Monitor (MTM) said. In its “Multitasking – TV and the Internet” report dated May 16 and released Tuesday, MTM, a joint research project between CBC/Radio-Canada and BBM Analytics, said 61 per cent of anglophone Canadians multitask online as they watch TV, “which is more than double the rate from 7 years ago.” The rate in 2005 was 25 per cent of anglophone Canadians, the report said. According to the report, which results from a telephone survey of 4,001 anglophones conducted in the fall of 2012 and accurate within plus or minus 1.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20, three quarters of anglophone Canadians browse the web and use their email while they watch television. Two in five anglophones, the report said, use the Internet to look up information about a show they’re watching or to read online news. Another three in five, or 59 per cent of anglophone Canadians, use social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter while they are watching TV, the report said. “Heavy multitaskers are spending 28 hours a week online –about 17 hours more a week than Anglophones who say they rarely or never multitask,” the report said, adding that those users are also 57 per cent more likely to own a tablet and access the Internet on their television. According to the report, among “heavy multitaskers” who own tablets, Apple Inc.’s iPad is the most popular device at an ownership rate of 28 per cent, followed by BlackBerry’s Playbook at eight per cent and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Galaxy tablet at three per cent. The report noted “heavy multitaskers” are more likely to own devices that let them control their TV content, with fifty three per cent of heavy multitaskers owning a personal video recorder (PVR).
