Rogers launches second-screen hockey app

Rogers Communications Inc. announced it is releasing a new hockey app that will give customers access to new camera angles and additional content like interviews and analysis. “Exclusive to Rogers’ customers, and it is the ultimate second-screen experience,” said Rogers Media president Keith Pelley at the launch event in Toronto on Monday. “It allows our customers to select replays, to pick camera angles, to be the producer, to be the director.” The GamePlus app is available to those who subscribe to Rogers’ NHL GameCentre Live streaming service, which was announced in September, and also have Rogers' cable, Internet, wireless or home-phone service. The new camera angles include the view from referees’ helmets, another that “spotlights the hustle from inside the blue lines and for the first time inside the players' benches,” and a “star cam” that tracks one player throughout a game, Rogers said, adding that customers will be able to choose multiple replay angles. The new camera angles will be available for “select NHL games each week,” in addition to the NHL playoffs, the NHL all-star game and the Winter Classic, Roger said. Rogers said it invested “more than $10 million” to create the app and the beta version will be launched in time for Wednesday's start to the 2014-15 regular season. Company spokeswoman Michelle Kelly said in an email the app will be available for smartphones and tablets running on Apple Inc.’s iOS and Google Inc.’s Android operating systems, and for computers via a website. Rogers, which bought NHL rights in Canada for the next 12 years for $5.2 billion, has said that the deal was a factor in spending $3.29 billion on wireless spectrum in the 700 MHz auction earlier this year.
