Mobile service gives Quebecor Q1 revenue boost

Quebecor Inc. reported a five-per-cent increase to revenue in the first quarter of 2016, bringing in $975.4 million compared to $929 million the same period a year earlier. According to quarterly earnings released Thursday, the company also turned a profit of $354.7 million, which according to adjusted figures was up 4.6 per cent in the three months ending March 31, compared to the same period a year earlier. Quebecor did not release non-adjusted net income figures. The adjusted figures don’t reflect depreciation/amortization of assets, and the periodic costs associated with those assets, the company’s report said. “The significant growth in our business volume was driven by the success of Videotron’s service offerings, the diversification of the Media segment’s revenue streams and development of the concert management and production business,” Pierre Dion, Quebecor president and CEO said in a press release. Videotron’s boosted revenues were propelled by a 30.2-per-cent increase in mobile phone service and a 42.6-per-cent increase to revenue from the Club illico over-the-top video service, the company said. The rise in profit was “propelled once again by the excellent performance of the Telecommunications segment,” Dion said. “We are confident that the opportunities created by the long-term evolution of the wireless industry will enable us to maintain sustained growth in our mobile telephony services.” Average revenue per user increased by 7.1 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier, to $141.37. At the end of the first quarter, Quebecor reported a net increase of 17,800 subscribers, bringing its total to 5,665,300. This included 27,100 mobile telephony subscribers, for a total of 795,700. “The net increase of 27,100 connections in the first quarter of 2016 was more than that of any of the incumbent operators in Canada,” Dion said. Quebecor also reported 9,900 more cable Internet subscribers (1,578,100 total), and 7,700 more Club illico subscribers (265,200 in total). Cable TV subscribers shrank by 14,900, bringing the total to 1,722,000. Combined revenues from all cable television services decreased by 2.6 per cent, Quebecor said, “due primarily to higher discounts, a decrease in pay TV and video-on-demand orders, and the impact of the net decrease in the customer base, partially offset by increases in some rates and increased revenues from the leasing of digital set-top-boxes.”
