Sasktel ties for fastest LTE speeds in the world: OpenSignal

Saskatchewan Telecommunications Holding Corp.’s LTE download speeds are among the fastest in the world, according to a new OpenSignal Inc. report. “In the fourth quarter, Singapore had the fastest networks by far, averaging 37 Mbps, and two of its operators and joined Canada’s SaskTel in vying for the title of world’s fastest operator,” the report, released Nov. 10, said. Though SaskTel’s speeds were closer to 35 Mbps, the margin of error was such to make that a statistical tie with the other carriers. The report noted the “numbers are meant to provide a general snapshot of 4G around the world, not compare the performance of individual operators against one another.” The rankings are based on data collected through apps on smartphones. Thursday’s report was based on “data from the hundreds of thousands of OpenSignal users that have LTE-capable phones and connect to operators with live 4G networks,” the report said, adding that while “data was collected in the three months between October and December … we also included our results from the previous three months for comparative purposes.” The report said that speeds are rising rapidly in general. “We’re seeing a much greater number of ultrafast networks around the world. A year ago, an average 4G speed of 20 Mbps would have been a truly impressive feat, but today there are 15 countries and 52 individual networks that meet or exceed that mark,” the report said. Canada ranked 17th in OpenSignal’s comparison of countries’ LTE coverage, four spots higher than in last year’s report. Canada was one spot higher than Kazakhstan and one spot lower than China, with LTE coverage 76 per cent of the time, according to the report. South Korea had the best LTE coverage in the world, same as last year. Canada ranked 15th for LTE speeds, with an average speed of 19 Mbps — one spot below Norway and one above Latvia.
