Redline Communications hires new CEO as it eyes LTE and 5G growth

Redline Communications Group Inc., a Markham-Ont.-based manufacturer of wireless network technology for mining, oil-and-gas, and utilities groups, is taking on a new CEO as it heads into what it says is its next growth phase. Richard Yoon, currently leading the Canadian division of Chinese consumer electronics company ZTE, will be the company’s new president and CEO, effective Sept. 13. "Richard is a recognized and highly respected executive in the Wireless Telecom market, with a proven track record in developing and executing strategies to create long-term shareholder value," D. Neil McDonnell, Redline’s board chair, said in a release Thursday. To find Redline’s new CEO, McDonnell said the board carried out a “rigorous selection process,” looking to executives in the wireless industry and comparing their skills “against key cornerstones of our strategy which includes scaling our LTE and 5G product portfolio and growing our customers and served markets.” Yoon has been with Toronto-based ZTE Canada for six years and has been its CEO since June 2020. The company sells consumer electronics including phones and mobile hotspot devices through carriers such as Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc., and Telus Corp., it says on its website. Prior to taking the top spot with ZTE, Yoon was an executive board member, a vice president of sales and marketing, and a senior director of business development with the company. Before he joined ZTE in 2015, he spent four years as director of sales with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., according to his LinkedIn profile. Yoon has also held a variety of positions with Telus, Bell, and other technology companies over his 30 years in the business. "I look forward to developing a world-class team, building upon the Company's loyal blue-chip customers and developing and investing in its technology to expand on Redline's unique differentiators, proprietary technologies and extensive patent portfolio,” Yoon said in the release. “With a strong sales funnel and expanding interest in our product suite, the Company is well positioned for sustained growth in revenue." Yoon is taking over from Stephen Sorocky, who resigned in July to “pursue other personal opportunities,” the company announced in May. Ronan McGrath took over as interim CEO of the publicly-traded company while the board conducted its search. In April, the federal government announced it plans to invest $14 million in Redline through its Strategic Innovation Fund so it can produce “Industrial 5G” products for clients in the mining, utilities, and oil and gas sectors.
