Telus expands networks in five B.C. communities

Telus Corp. is expanding its 5G network in four British Columbia communities as part of its $13 billion infrastructure and operations investment in the province through 2024, In a series of Monday releases, Telus announced its 5G network is expanding to residents and businesses in Fort St. James, Bulkley-Nechako and Houston, Parksville and Qualicum Beach, and Port Hardy. “Indeed, the ongoing expansion of our next-generation 5G technology is bridging time and distance, allowing residents to live and work in any community without compromising productivity or economic opportunity,” Telus president and CEO Darren Entwistle said in the releases. Telus said it is expanding its 5G network to an additional 529 new communities across Canada by leveraging multiple vendors including Samsung Electronics Co., Ericsson AB, and Nokia Corp. The company estimates by the end of the year more than 70 per cent of Canadians will experience its 5G network which is expected to provide speeds up to 1.7 Gbps, according to its releases. It added that 5G, in general, is expected to create 250,000 jobs and contribute $150 billion to Canada’s economy. “The evolution of 5G will also allow us to connect more than 30 billion life-changing devices, supercharge drones with sensors for improved crop management and make autonomous vehicles smarter and safer,” it said in the releases. Telus is also spending $60 million to connect residents and businesses in Maple Ridge to its fiber-optic network, at gigabit internet speeds, it announced last Thursday in a release. The investment is also part of its $13 billion commitment to British Columbia, and won’t come at a cost to taxpayers, the company stated. Work on the network has already begun with the majority to be completed by 2023. Since 2013, the company invested more than $5 billion to connect 137 communities and 62 First Nations in British Columbia, Alberta, and parts of Quebec to its PureFibre network, according to its Thursday release.
