INDU to hold hearings into Rogers outage, CIRA backs full public hearing at CRTC

The House of Commons Industry committee will launch hearings into the Friday, July 8 Rogers Communications Inc. outage, the committee voted Friday. The committee will undertake a study of a number of different aspects of the outage, including the causes; the impact on families, consumers, businesses, as well as the healthcare, law enforcement, and financial sectors; best practices to prevent and mitigate similar outages in the future; and best practices for communication during an outage in the future. The committee will invite executives from Rogers, officials at the CRTC, and Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne to appear before the committee The motion for the hearings was brought forward by Liberal MP Han Dong. The committee's MPs largely rejected an effort from Bloc Québécois MP Martin Champoux to also invite Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino to the initial hearings in favor of keeping a focused agenda. While the committee voted to hold two meetings for hearings into the outage this month, MPs left the door open to continuing hearings on the outage when parliament resumes for the fall session. Meanwhile, the Canadian Internet Registry Authority (CIRA) has endorsed a call from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre for a full public hearing into the outage. In a Friday statement, CIRA president and CEO Byron Holland said that the "recent nationwide Rogers outage is a wake-up call for Canada." "It is critical that we get a full understanding of what happened, how we can prevent something similar in the future, and, most importantly, how the various players in Canada’s digital ecosystem can work together to ensure trust in the internet is strengthened," Holland said. "While the ongoing CRTC investigation is a good first step, CIRA recommends that a full and frank public hearing be held, and we offer our expertise and assistance in that process to ensure Canadians' trust in the internet is restored.”
