5G services launch in busiest parts of TTC

All passengers on the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) subway system now have access to 5G services in some of its busiest sections, according to a Rogers Communications Inc. press release on Monday. The announcement states that customers of all major Canadian wireless carriers, including BCE Inc. and Telus Corp. will have cellular connectivity in all stations and tunnels in the Downtown U on Line 1; plus Spadina and Dupont stations. The 13 stations from Keele to Castle Frank on Line 2; plus the tunnels between St. George and Yonge stations are also connected. “We are very pleased to bring 5G connectivity to all subway riders,” said CEO Tony Staffieri in the release. “Our team has been working around the clock to introduce an immediate solution so all riders can connect when travelling on the busiest sections of the TTC subway system.” This expanded network access comes one day before the connectivity deadline set by Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne last month. The minister intervened in a dispute between telecoms seeking to gain access to the coveted network after Rogers took control of it by acquiring BAI Canada in April. “Our dedicated team of technologists designed and introduced an immediate solution that added capacity, so Bell and Telus could join the network,” Ron McKenzie, Rogers' chief technology and information officer, stated. All carriers offering service in Toronto are required by the department of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development to establish commercial agreements for TTC access rates by Dec. 20, which will apply retroactively to when their service first launched. Once those agreements are established, carriers have six months to provide coverage in all current stations; two years to cover 80 per cent of existing tunnels; and three years to cover all tunnels.
