Privacy Commissioner unveils its privacy rights strategic plan 2024-2027

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) unveiled its Strategic Plan for 2024-2027, setting a roadmap for trust, innovation, and the protection of fundamental privacy rights in the digital age. Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne, who assumed the role in mid-2022, shared his vision anchored in three pillars: privacy as a fundamental right, privacy supporting the public interest and Canada's innovation, and privacy as a key factor in building trust among digital citizens. “The privacy issues and risks that we collectively face as a society, in both the public and private sectors, are vast and, at times, can seem challenging, however we face the situation with optimism,” said Commissioner Dufresne in the Monday release. “These strategic priorities are where I believe that my Office can have the greatest impact for Canadians and where the greatest risks lie if they are not addressed.” Under the plan, the OPC aims to optimize programs and services, increase compliance, and positively influence federal privacy law reforms. Initiatives include increased use of data for decision-making, focused guidance and outreach, and cultivating strategic partnerships. The plan focuses on addressing the privacy impacts of rapid technological advancements, especially in AI. It aims to enhance the OPC's internal capacity, build partnerships, and establish concrete privacy standards for existing and emerging technologies. The OPC is also seeking to protect children's privacy rights by enhancing knowledge, engaging with youth for informed education and outreach, applying a children's privacy lens to compliance work, and cultivating networks and partnerships to drive positive changes. The full plan, along with progress updates, will be communicated to Parliament through annual reports and Departmental Results Reports. The OPC is seeking feedback from stakeholders to help inform how the plan is implemented over the next few years to advance the identified strategic priorities. Comments can be submitted via email or a feedback form on the OPC website until March 31, 2024.
