Telus, Huawei closer to 5G with network deployment

Telus Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., who have been collaborating to help develop 5G technology, said they have achieved another step toward its deployment. 

Half a billion subscribers will be on 5G by 2022: Ericsson

An Ericsson AB report is projecting that more than 550 million subscribers will be on 5G networks by 2022.  

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report, released Tuesday, said that two years after it becomes available in 2020, 5G will cover 10 per cent of the world’s population.

Videotron announces testing as 5G gains momentum in Canada

MONTREAL — Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron said Tuesday it will begin to test 5G technologies as part of a new project, in a move that appears to be part of an increasing push toward the next generation of wireless in recent months.  

All carriers will eventually get to 5G, Videotron CEO Manon Brouillette said in an interview following a lunchtime speech at the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

First Canadian 5G trial wraps up

BCE Inc. and Nokia Corp. have completed a trial of 5G technology, which they say is the first such initiative in Canada.

“Conducted at Bell's Wireless Innovation Centre in Mississauga, the trial leveraged spectrum in the 73 GHz range to achieve sustained data speeds more than [six] times faster than top 4G mobile speeds now available in Canada,” Bell said in a press release Friday.

5G key to future wireless profitability, Ericsson’s CTO says

TORONTO — With customers’ usage of data increasing exponentially, and carriers limited in how much they can charge for that data, telecoms will have to turn to 5G networks, Ericsson Canada’s Dragan Nerandzic said at the Canadian Telecom Summit Monday.

Huawei, Telus to create 5G lab in Vancouver

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. said Friday that it has partnered with Telus Corp. to create a lab to help develop 5G technology.

It said in a press release that the project, called the 5G Living Lab, will design, test and deploy new technology in order to “deliver a next-generation converged fibre-wireless network in downtown Vancouver.”

Verizon plans to test 5G next year

Verizon Communications Inc. announced Tuesday it has created a roadmap to begin field trials for 5G wireless technology as early as 2016.

The company said in a press release it is partnering with Alcatel-LucentEricson AB, Cisco Systems Inc.Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Qualcomm Inc. and Nokia Corp., in creating working teams to bring the technology to the U.S.

5G revenue predicted to surge between 2020 and 2025

Global service revenue from 5G wireless connections will skyrocket from $100 million US in 2020 to $65 billion US in 2025, Juniper Research Ltd. said Wednesday.

The British research company said in a press release that 2020 is expected to be the first year 5G services are commercially available, though widespread adoption and sufficient spectrum licensing will take years to achieve.

ITU defines roadmap to 5G

The United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the intergovernmental body that is responsible for establishing worldwide standards of communication systems, announced Friday it has defined a roadmap for 5G mobile network development.

It said in a press release that it has defined the process, goals and the timeline for development of 5G networks, and that it plans to discuss technical requirements of creating a 5G network for optimal performance with a goal of having the new system in place by 2020.

Prepare for 5G, says Huawei Canada boss

The president of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.'s Canadian unit is calling for policy-makers, businesses and academics in Canada to come together and help prepare the country for the coming of 5G networking technology.

At a breakfast event hosted by the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce Thursday morning, Sean Yang was to call for the creation of a public policy group, comprised of various public- and private-sector players, to prepare Canada for this next stage in the evolution of communications technology.

Ericsson, IBM working on 5G antennas

Ericsson AB and International Business Machines (IBM) Corp. announced Monday that they are working together researching antennas for the future era of 5G wireless communications.

The companies said in a press release that they will collaborate on designing antennas that meet key demands of the next generation of wireless standards, often referred to as 5G. That includes higher data capacity and more connections as new services and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications grow.

FCC investigates spectrum capabilities for 5G

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced Friday that is going to examine the potential use of spectrum in frequencies once thought unusable for mobile services in anticipation of 5G wireless services.

The FCC said in a news release it is looking to "broaden the commission's understanding of the state of the art in technological development," and determine whether it is possible to use spectrum at 24 GHz (24,000 MHz) or above for "next-generation mobile wireless services."

Despite challenges, 5G wireless could arrive by 2020

Though all the possibilities that 4G wireless technology presents still haven’t been fully explored, industry experts gathered in Ottawa on Wednesday to look ahead at the next generation of wireless networks and discuss what 5G mobility will be like.

The commercial availability of 5G networks is expected around 2020, Wen Tong, an Ottawa-based fellow with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., said at the 5G@Canada Roundtable, organized by the global Chinese telecom company.
