Apple TVs could arrive in 2014: analyst

Apple Inc. will likely start selling a new television device in 2014, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Analyst Masahiko Ishino told WSJ that Apple would probably begin selling the ultra-high-definition TVs in the fourth quarter of next year.

The TVs would have 65- and 55-inch screens and are likely to have a frameless design, WSJ said.

Previous reports predicted that Apple would release a new iTV product later this year.

iTunes radio coming to Canada: report

Apple Inc. is planning to bring its iTunes Radio streaming music service to Canada, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

Citing anonymous sources, Bloomberg said Apple plans to expand the service, released in the U.S. Sept. 18, to Canada as well as Nordic countries and some additional English-speaking markets, by early 2014.

CBC/Radio-Canada, Rdio, AOL Inc., and Quebecor Media Inc. currently offer online music services in Canada.

Apple not releasing a TV: executive

Mike Fries, chief executive of cableco Liberty Global Plc., said he doesn’t expect Apple Inc. to come out with its own television, Bloomberg reported Monday.

Previous reports predicted that Apple would release a new iTV product later this year.

In April, AP reported that the iTV would measure 60 inches diagonally, though it could also come in 50- and 55-inch versions, and that it would cost between $1,500 US to $2,500 US.

The next battle for OTT? Licensing

Television providers have had a few years now to get used to online competition from over-the-top streaming services, though they should brace for more. As early as this year, they will be facing a new generation of online competition.

Google Inc., Apple Inc., Sony Corp. and Intel Corp. are working on launching new over-the-top television services that may allow the viewer to flip through feeds from paid cable TV channels, including live programming.

U.S. tech companies launch site for patent reform

Major United States technology companies launched a new website Wednesday to promote patent reform.

The website, called Patent Progress, was created by the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), whose members include Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., Yahoo! Inc., Pandora Media Inc., and others.

Apple settles all patent disputes with HTC

Apple Inc. settled all patent disputes with Taiwan-based HTC Corp., the companies said Saturday.

In a release, HTC and Apple said they reached a “global settlement” covering the “dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement.”

In an op-ed Sunday published on technology news service TechCrunch, Ansel Halliburton, a lawyer with U.S. firm ComputerLaw Group, said he believes the 10-year deal means HTC and Apple reached a patent licensing agreement, with Apple holding the upper hand.

Samsung gains tablet market share on Apple

Apple Inc.’s growth in the tablet market slowed in the third quarter of 2012 as the company competed with devices made by Samsung Electronics Co. and Amazon Inc., the International Data Corporation (IDC) said.

The firm released new data Monday that said Apple's third quarter worldwide market share was 50.4 per cent, down from 59.7 in the same period a year earlier.

Samsung, Apple, RIM lead global smartphone shipments in Q3

Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. led smartphone shipments during the third quarter of 2012 as RIM Ltd. moved up to rank third and Nokia Co. dropped off the list of top five smartphone manufacturers, research firm IDC said Thursday.

Samsung led shipments in the third quarter with 105.4 million units worldwide, IDC said. Apple ranked second with 26.9 million smartphones shipped and RIM third with 7.7 million.

Microsoft launches Windows 8 Surface as Apple unveils mini tab

Microsoft Corp. released its new Windows 8 operating system for computers and mobile devices.

Microsoft said in a release Thursday that, as of midnight Friday, Windows 8 will be available for download to PCs in more than 140 markets. The company said the new system will be available in Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro versions for PCs.

Apple bounce back patent invalidated

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has invalided an Apple Inc. smartphone patent covering touchscreen "bounce backs" when users scroll beyond the edge of a page, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The patent, one of six that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. was found to have infringed in August, was overturned after Samsung asked the patent office to review the file, the news agency said.

Microsoft Surface available for pre-order

Canadian consumers can pre-order Microsoft Corp.’s new Surface tablet, according to the company’s sales website.

In a notice on the company’s website this week, Microsoft said people in Canada can pre-order 32 GB versions of its tablet for $519, without a cover, and $619 with a cover. It said 64 GB versions of the tablet, which will include a cover, will be available for $719.

U.S. court lifts ban on Galaxy Nexus sales

A U.S. appeals court removed an American sales ban on Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone as part of the company’s patent dispute with Apple Inc., Bloomberg and Reuters reported Thursday.

Bloomberg reported that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit removed a court-ordered injunction on sales of the phone while Samsung challenges a June 29 federal court ruling related to an Apple patent claim against the Galaxy Nexus.

Android surged in Q2 despite weakened cell phone sales: Gartner

Worldwide smartphone sales increased year-over-year by 42.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 despite a 2.3 per cent decline in overall cell phone sales, research firm Gartner Inc. said in a new report released Tuesday.

In a release, Gartner said its “Market Share: Mobile Devices, Worldwide, 2Q12” report found that 153.7 million smartphones were sold around the globe in the three-month period ending June 30, up from 107.7 million during the same period a year earlier.

Google, Apple share of shipments surge to 85%

Mobile operating systems by Google Inc. and Apple Inc. powered 85 per cent of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2012, the International Data Corporation (IDC) said Wednesday.

IDC cited its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report and said Google's Android platform held a 68.1 per cent market share of all smartphones shipped during the quarter. That represents a year-over-year rise of 106.5 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2011, IDC said.

Google TV launching in Canada with 150 TV-optimized apps

Canada's over-the-top television landscape will become more competitive this summer as Sony Corp. launches Google Inc.'s Google TV product in the country for the first time.

Sony Canada said in a release Monday it will sell a new device called the NSZ-GS7, or Sony Internet Player with Google TV, for $200 in Canada. It will be available from Canadian retailers in August and pre-orders can be made online starting June 27 on Sony's website, the company said.
