Competition Bureau clears Corus acquisitions

The federal Competition Bureau cleared Corus Entertainment Inc.'s plan to acquire full ownership of specialty channels it jointly owns with Astral Media Inc., Corus said Monday.

The purchase is related to BCE Inc.'s $3.38-billion bid to acquire Astral.

Corus defends OWN as educational channel

Corus Entertainment Inc. defended its Oprah Winfrey Network Canada (OWN Canada) channel before the CRTC Tuesday, saying it contributes to learning in Canada.

“OWN Canada contributes far more to providing interesting content and engaging viewers and contributing to a learning culture than it has at any time in the past,” Doug Murphy, executive vice-president of Corus and president of Corus Television, told commissioners, according to speaking notes.

Corus invests in Fingerprint Digital’s mobile apps for kids

Corus Entertainment Inc. will be a lead investor in the expansion of Fingerprint Digital Inc.’s Fingerprint Play learning and entertainment platform, the companies said Wednesday.

In a release, Fingerprint said the Fingerprint Play platform is available on Apple Inc.’s iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices. The platform features 14 applications with entertaining and educational content that seeks to engage parents as well as children in a gaming environment, the company said.
