Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday it is cutting as many as 7,800 positions primarily as a result of restructuring its phone hardware business.
The company said in a press release that this will result in a write-down of about $7.6 billion US on assets gained through the acquisition of Nokia Corp.'s devices and services business last year. It said it faced an additional $750 million to $850 million in restructuring costs.
Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday released its new Lumia 535 smartphone.
The 535 is the first of the Lumia series of phones not to carry the Nokia brand. Microsoft completed its purchase of Nokia Corp.'s devices and services business in April.
Major United States technology companies launched a new website Wednesday to promote patent reform.
The website, called Patent Progress, was created by the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), whose members include Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., Yahoo! Inc., Pandora Media Inc., and others.
